Nowadays Valentine’s Day is celebrated as a day for couples to display their affection for each other, the louder seems to be the better. How different is this from the origin of Valentine’s Day!

The most accepted explanation of the origin of Valentine’s Day is that it came from an event that happened in the days of the Roman Empire. Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine was caught performing marriage rituals and was executed.┬á

One would imagine that in the days when Emperor Claudius II still ruled, lovers would not dare to sign their love notes to each other. Perhaps that is why, when Valentine’s Day cards became popular in the early 19th century, they were not signed with the name of the author, but with “X”s, representing kisses. Those who were already couples of course would know who sent it, but often the cards were sent as a tease or a prank. If Instagram were invented in those days, we would have seen a lot of posts of people looking puzzled/ elated/ embarrassed when they opened an envelope and found a Valentine’s Day card.

So you see, Valentine’s Day can be a lot of fun! You can also use it to tell your secret crush about your feelings and avoid the embarrassment if the feeling is not mutual, if you do it with some finesse.

Photo together

“Hey, look at that nice flower arrangement with those big hearts. Let’s take a photo there!”

Put the heads and bodies together like a couple when you take that V Day selfie. Who else but a wished couple would take a photo like that on Valentine’s Day?

Hold it Up High

“A poor kid was begging me to buy this balloon and I could not bear to see his sad face, so I bought it. Could you hold it for me while I fix my hair?”

Share Some Body Fluid

You do not need to take someone to a fancy restaurant to show your feelings. Go to a decent cafe, and then order a drink that you and your mark have not ordered before. Take a big sip.

“Wow, this drink is really something! I can’t describe the taste. Take a sip, try it!” You push the cup to your heart’s desire, and see if he or she will drink it from the cup.

If he or she does drink from the cup, then the amor├® is mutual, or that person has low hygiene standard.
